National, international and local news coverage

The role of the news and information service on Jazz FM's is to ensure that in selecting us as their music station of preference, our listeners do not miss out on key stories affecting their lives. We must always keep our audience in touch, but without losing our primary function as a music station. We aim for Jazz FM's to be the first choice station of our listeners. We do not want them to be forced to switch stations for up-to-date and relevant news.

In planning our news service, we will create a partnership which brings together

Striking the right balance in our news bulletins between national, international and local news is critical, and only a dedicated team of radio news professionals, based at Jazz FM's can do this. They will ensure that, by the time they come to air, our bulletins will be:

Current affairs coverage

Jazz FM's is aware that Dublin people are among the biggest consumers of media in the world. In keeping with our policy on news, we also want listeners to feel that Jazz FM's will provide them with expert comment and analysis on issues that affect their lives. We therefore intend broadcasting two 15-minute current affairs programmes daily called Inside Edition produced and presented by our own news team to offer comment on issues that affect life in Dublin.

sports coverage

Jazz FM's understands the key role sports plays in the life of almost every Dubliner. We intend to reflect this passion by not only broadcasting regular sports bulletins, but also by providing two dedicated sports programmes on a Monday and Wednesday evening covering all aspects of sport in Dublin, and issues abroad that are of interest to a Dublin audience.

Music policy of the station and details of the range and type of music programming proposed

Although Jazz FM's's music is unambiguously distinctive, it is not only a station for people who would describe themselves as jazz fans. We assume no specialist knowledge from our listener and we do not attempt to educate them. Our experience shows, and our research confirms, that our audience is a wide group of listeners who simply enjoy good music. They clearly state that they don't want the repetitive or beat-driven selection of other music stations.

Jazz FM's daytime mix focuses predominantly on jazz and soul, complemented by blues and R&B. The station also features a range of themed and specialist programmes in these and related areas.

Jazz FM's exists to complement rather than duplicate existing commercial radio stations. A maximum of one in five songs played on the station, averaged over any three-hour period, may have featured in the Top 40 UK Singles Chart - this is a maximum and not a norm. Any chart material featured must fall broadly within the station's core genres of jazz, soul, blues and R&B.

Jazz FM's music falls within four policies:

Our daytime mix is carefully constructed to attract a general audience. Contemporary jazz accounts for two thirds or more of this policy with a sound that is mellow, stylish and sophisticated. Typical artists include Dianne Reeves, Grover Washington Jr., Diana Krall and Bob James. Complementing this, the remaining one-third of our daytime music comprising mainly soul together with other jazz influences such as blues and R&B. The function of these categories is primarily to add variety of texture and pace while maintaining the jazz mood. Within these categories we also play a light sprinkling of more familiar songs - mainly classic soul - at a rate of about one an hour.

The total number of active tracks for our daytime jazz and soul output will be between 700 and 800, with monthly reviews to keep the music fresh. Our most frequently played songs - current jazz tracks - will receive at least six hours title separation, while our least played tracks will be played at intervals of up to three weeks

Jazz FM's will be sensitive to the needs of the Irish music industry and will integrate music by Irish artists throughout its playlists.

Music research informs our choice of tracks and complements the creative instinct and flair of our programmers. Regular “in-house” music research - including cassettes of music sent to the homes of listeners and potential listeners will yield actionable results, significantly improving time spent listening to the station, and helping to convert new listeners sampling the station in response to our heavyweight promotional activity.

Cool Jazz blends music from across the entire range of the Jazz FM's repertoire. The music here will be selected by hand, drawing from both the presenter's own CD collection and the music in our library assembled. We would estimate this would add around 4000 tracks to the active playlist.

Finally, specialist programming is a key Jazz FM's commitment, bringing a further layer of depth, variety and distinctiveness to the station. Our schedule includes jazz funk, Irish jazz, cutting edge new jazz, traditional jazz, blues, soul and Latin/salsa. We would wish to retain flexibility to introduce additional specialist output during the licence period, and to review the initial balance of shows in the light of audience reaction.

As indicated under Jazz FM's presentation style will be informative, intelligent, and entertaining, conveying our passion for the music in an understated but warm fashion. We do not play more than two records without intervening presentation during the Breakfast Show and the Drivetime programme. At other times there may be up to four records in a row, but more typically three.
